International Projects

Green Bubbles is an EU-funded project dedicated to recreational SCUBA diving, an activity engaging millions of people worldwide. Green Bubbles will maximise the benefits associated with diving while minimising its negative impacts, thus achieving the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the system.

Funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 643712, Green Bubbles is run by a consortium of nine entities, including universities, research organisations, educational organisations and SMEs from Italy, the Netherlands, Malta, Turkey, South Africa and the United States.

Susutainability

Green Bubbles is the EU-funded project dedicated to sustainable SCUBA diving. We tend to think of sustainability as an environmental concept, only. However, a business that is not economically sustainable may hardly be able to invest in correct environmental practices even when willing to. And in a crisis period, frictions and competition may turn into conficts that are socially unsustainable. In short, the three components of sustainability are all interlinked.

Recreational SCUBA diving has become a mass leisure activity engaging millions of divers worldwide. The diving industry generates large direct and indirect revenues for coastal communities and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Other benefits linked to diving include the promotion of ocean stewardship, contribution to scientific research, fostering social inclusion and personal development. Yet, diving has also negative impacts, due to damage or disturbance of habitats and organisms, and to conflicts with local communities for the access to/use of the same resources, equity issues, or cultural clashes. These aspects clearly relate to the three pillars of sustainability, covering environmental, economic and social dimensions and can only be addressed by a systemic approach.

The central objective of Green Bubbles is to maximise the benefits associated with diving while minimising its negative impacts, thus achieving the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the system.

Green Bubbles Survey: The purpose of this survey is to determine divers' experience versus expectations regarding the diving experience in general. Your answers to this 15 to 20-minute questionnaire will give valuable information for designing strategies to manage dive destinations as well as the experience based on the needs of the market. There are great prizes from Cressi, one of the top manufacturers of diving gear, up for grabs.

Citizen Science Quesionnaire

Dear scuba diver,This survey is intended to understand your knowledge, attitudes and participation with regards to Citizen Science. Whether or not you have participated in Citizen Science, you are invited to complete this survey, which will only take about 10 minutes.

Those who participate and leave their email address will enter a lucky draw to win a free dive in Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique.

Just to give you a brief introduction, Citizen Science is defined as any involvement of volunteer participants in the generation of scientific knowledge, that is, observation, sampling, collection of data, and analysis of data, which enter the normal scientific production cycle, ideally leading to reports supporting management decisions and scientific publications.

Your participation will be greatly appreciated, as it will contribute towards improving scuba divers' involvement and inclusion in science and research.

Thank you for your time.
