Recreational Student Diver Coverage Over the years DAN Southern Africa has been developing a low-cost, high-benefit cover specifically for entry-level Scuba divers. We have found that many Scuba divers enter the sport without understanding the risks and the possible expenses if treatment is required for an in-water injury or illness.
Through our marketing research we have discovered that the initial high cost of entering the sport appears to be the primary discouragement to novice divers from joining DAN.
We are therefore delighted to offer such divers the benefit of DAN Student Membership: At NO COST, entry-level Scuba divers can enjoy the piece of mind -- and all the benefits - of DAN Membership for the entire duration of their entry-level Scuba diving course, including pool and open water sessions, up to a maximum period of 6 weeks. (Please note that only entry-level courses leading to certification as a recreational Scuba diver are accepted) Resort Courses and discover Scuba, etc are not accepted.
DAN Student Membership, like all the DAN membership programmes, is fully underwritten by Chartis South Africa. To enrol, Scuba diving instructors (who must themselves be active DAN members) simply need to provide DAN Southern Africa with their course rosters together with the completed DAN Student Membership forms. Access to dive medical cover provides significant reassurance to diving instructors by knowing that their students are covered for the potentially significant costs of evacuation and treatment for diving injuries. We hope that all diving instructors will encourage their students to enrol as DAN Student Members, or even automatically include it in their entry-level training programs. DAN Student Membership is a valuable new addition to the portfolio of diving safety services and products offered by DAN.

Why students need cover?
Instructors have asked why students should have cover, since they are not exposed to the same diving risks as certified divers. DAN offers cover - COMPLIMENTARY – to student divers because their risk is indeed much lower. However injuries can occur during instruction: in fact, according to DAN's annual "report on Decompression Illness and Diving Fatalities, student injuries have been the third and fourth leading dive activity associated with diving injuries during the past several years. With this knowledge, dive instructors are well advised to take advantage of DAN’s complimentary student cover programme now.
