Instructors & Instructor Trainers

There are thousands of independent DAN Instructors and Instructor Trainers currently teaching DAN courses worldwide. Since the programme’s inception, more than 200 000 individuals have taken a DAN course.

Instructor Qualification Course

The DAN IQC consists of eight modules. There is a core module that introduces DAN and the DAN Training philosophy. This core program serves as the introduction for all other DAN Training programs. The remaining program modules represent each of the individual training courses offered by DAN. After completing a DAN Instructor Qualification Course (IQC) which is the core module, you will become a qualified DAN Instructor. As a

DAN Instructor, you can offer the following courses after you have completed them:
  • Basic Life Support
  • First Aid
  • Neurological Assessment
  • Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries
  • Diving Emergency Management Provider
  • Dive Medicine for Divers Level 1,2 & 3

Only the following may qualify for the IQC:
  • An active DAN Member
  • An active scuba diving educator
  • A current CPR & First Aid instructor (You may complete the DAN Basic Life Support and First Aid course to fulfil this requirement.)

Any scuba diving instructor or assistant instructor with a recognised scuba training organisation can attend the IQC. A Divemaster who is also a CPR & First Aid instructor with a recognized training agency can also attend the IQC.

Diving Emergency Management Provider

To offer this program, DAN instructor trainers and instructors must be in active teaching status for:
  • Basic Life Support and First Aid
  • Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
  • First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries

Qualifications of DAN Instructors

Once qualified, instructors must maintain active teaching status with DAN to conduct DAN training programs. To maintain active teaching status, DAN Instructors must teach or assist with teaching each course in which they are certified once within a 24-month period. As long as you remain a current and active DAN Instructor, you  may take additional modules without retaking the core module. The core module is online available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Recommended Minimum Hours of Training:

  • Knowledge and Skills Development
  • Core module  3 hours
  • Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries:  4 hours
  • Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries:  3 hours
  • First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries:  4 hours
  • Automated External Defibrillators for Scuba Diving:  4 hours
  • Neurological Assessment:  3 hours
  • Basic Life Support:  5-6 hours
  • First Aid:  8-10 hours
  • Dive Medicine for Divers:  6-8 hours (Level I-III)

The time the course actually takes to teach varies, depend on  the number of students, and also their ability to process the educational components of the program along with the number of modules offered. DAN Instructor Trainers who wish to include subjects or training beyond the course requirements, may do so only before or following the course. Any additional training  are not required for completion of a specific DAN course.

Course Objective

The DAN IQC trains and educates qualified scuba diving educators to plan, manage, conduct and promote dive safety through DAN training programs such as the Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course and other courses mentioned previously. In addition, the course develops role-model teaching techniques in the use of first aid for suspected dive injuries. Instructor candidates also have the opportunity to develop further knowledge in relation to the special considerations involved in providing emergency first aid. Qualified instructor trainers can present all seven program modules or select only the modules appropriate for the instructor candidates.

Core Module

Divers wanting to qualify as DAN instructors must complete the mandatory core module. Before completing this online module, discuss training opportunities with your DAN instructor trainer. If you still need to find one, use our DAN instructor directory. Please note that you have to be a dive instructor affiliated with a recognised training agency or a leadership-level diver (for example: DM) and a CPR/first aid instructor. To teach some classes you will also need to be a CPR instructor. You will need to complete the exam at the end and present the certificate you receive to your trainer. Please print it out.
After completing the core module, either with your trainer or online, you can take the appropriate course modules for the programmes you are interested in teaching.

Instructor Trainer Course

In order to present a DAN Instructor Qualification Course (IQC), certification is needed as a DAN Instructor Trainer. This is done by completing a DAN Instructor Trainer Workshop (ITW). To attend a DAN ITW, attendees must be active scuba instructor trainers with a recognised training agency. Go online to the DAN website to find a DAN Instructor Trainer Workshop  close to you.
